FACT CHECK: MD vs. DO

Have you ever noticed some doctors do not have an MD listed after their name but instead a DO?

MDs and DOs are both doctors who can treat patients. MDs are medical doctors while DOs are doctors of osteopathic medicine.

MDs are trained at a medical school for four years.

DO's graduated from an osteopathic medical school.

Both an osteopathic school of medicine and a medical school are four years .

Dos can specialize in anything an MD can. DOs however typically choose family medicine.

Differences

The difference is not just in credentials but in treatment style. DOs tend to focus on preventative care and the whole body. They take a more holistic approach to medicine. However, MDs are considered to be a more ludicrous credential.

Downsides

Statistically speaking it is easier to get into osteopathic medical school than a traditional medical school. However osteopathic schools are harder than medical schools. Also because DOs do not receive as much respect as earning an MD it is harder to get into residency.

Your Future

If you are someone who takes a more holistic approach to medicine maybe going to Osepathic medical school might be right for you. However, if you are someone who prefers the scientific medical part of the healthcare field you might prefer attending medical school. It's all up to you and you have time.
